Android Community provides a video demo of a new twist on texting available for Samsung’s new Galaxy S Android phone.
As you can see in the photo above, the Road SMS app overlays a QWERTY keyboard on a live camera view. The idea is that you will be able to keep an eye on the world in front of you while you text. While this is a very clever idea, it is also a terrible one.
I’ve never seen anyone text with arms stretched out holding a phone perpendicular to the ground. People text looking down at an angle towards the ground. So, the use case of walking while texting will not improve. Moreover, if people are focused on the on-screen keyboard, the world “behind” the keyboard will be ignored. Even worse is the use case we know will be used with this app: People will hold it on their car steering wheel and text while driving. This is an accident waiting to happen.
