Outreach Strategies, LLC (OS) announced today that the firm’s senior leadership is expanding with the hires of Elizabeth Curwen as vice president and Evan Carlson as account manager. A seasoned public affairs practitioner with 20 years of experience in working with corporations, trade associations and nonprofits on environment, health and related public policy issues, Curwen comes to OS from Spitfire Strategies, where she had been leading major client engagements for the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Ford Foundation and nonprofits across the country. As a vice president at Spitfire, she helped foundations articulate clear strategies and worked with grantees to implement that vision through strategic communication. Curwen has run national and state-based thought leadership, media and issue campaigns at a variety of agencies and associations, including the American Chemistry Council and APCO Worldwide. (Release) DNA ancestry company 23andMe has hired Angela Wonson as VP of communications. She has been in the role for about five weeks. Wonson is leading the company’s corporate communications, media relations, investor relations, and internal communications activities. Wonson replaced Christine Castro, who left to become SVP for communications at CBS Interactive, in the role. After beginning her career in TV news, Wonson gained experience in healthcare communications in roles at the Cleveland Clinic and Intuitive Surgical, where she said she was driven by work that had an effect at "the human level and on a societal level." Most recently, Wonson was VP of communications and senior media adviser at Intuitive Surgical. Previously, she was EVP and director of healthcare media at Weber Shandwick and SVP for national health media relations at Edelman. She has also served as CCO at The Cleveland Clinic, according to a statement from 23andMe. (Release) Cumulus announces the promotion of Steve Shaw to president of Westwood One, where he will expand his role as head of national spot sales for Cumulus' owned-and-operated stations to include all national and digital sales for Westwood One, effective immediately. Shaw is currently senior vice president of Cumulus National Sales, a position he has held since March, 2013. In Steve's new role he will oversee Westwood One Networks, Westwood One Sports, and Westwood One Digital, including Rdio and Cumulus National Sales, which will be renamed Westwood One Media Group. Shaw was previously president of Katz Radio Group and president of Cox Digital Solutions. (Release) Hawthorne Direct has expanded its Digital Media Marketing capabilities by launching a Mobile Marketing Unit. Concurrently, Jared Lake, who will spearhead the new unit, has been named director, Digital Media. Lake will be based in the company’s Los Angeles headquarters. Prior to joining Hawthorne Direct as director, Digital Media, Jared Lake had been director, Business Development, with M&C Saatchi Mobile in Los Angeles. There, he was responsible for managing the business development team in North American and ensuring revenue growth via new business for that leading full service mobile agency. During this time, he worked with numerous brands and direct response clients. He also led the development and strategy on all new business pitches for consumer brands, mobile game developers, e-commerce & traditional retail and mobile developers seeking app marketing, strong, cost efficient user acquisition, and branding/awareness campaigns. From 2010 to 2012, Lake was a digital & social media consultant. On behalf of his diverse clients, he also supervised content distribution, the leveraging of a strong Web presence, and developing a variety of e-commerce initiatives. As director, Business Development, for Impact Mobile in Los Angeles (2009-2012,) Lake led West Coast business development and sales -- with an emphasis on entertainment and retail sectors -- for that mobile technology services company.
