As far as FishbowlLA is concerned, the following snippet from Robert Blake’s remarkable Wednesday interview on Piers Morgan Tonight is the media-analysis quote of the week:
“I would have assumed that you and that guy in your ear would trust me. And if you don’t, then we’d better start talking about The Little Rascals.”
Blake was responding to Morgan’s suggestion that he was perhaps not being entirely truthful about his recollections of the May 2005 murder of his wife Bonnie Lee Bakley. At age 78, the actor remains a barn-busting Hollywood original, not to mention the first and likely last guest to show up on Morgan’s show wearing the combo of A Clockwork Orange hat and V-neck tank top.
This sort of controversial, memorable interview is exactly what Morgan needs. As has been widely reported, CNN is coming off some miserable 2012 Q2 ratings, with Morgan;s program down 29% from the same period last year and pulling in less than 33% of the critical 25-to-54 demo.
Morgan is actually a very good interviewer. But as the reader comments on the CNN.com companion piece item remind, many viewers still can’t seem to get past his accent, Brit personality and-or Fleet Street background.
