PRSA Issues Guidance on Intern Programs

The Public Relations Society of American (PRSA) has issued a professional standards advisory (PSA) on the ethical use of PR and comms interns. A recent BBC story accused one firm, Modus Publicity, of employing 20 unpaid interns. Guidance is now under review in the UK.

The PRSA guidance advises caution to firms in the U.S. that have interns because of federal and state laws surrounding “compensation and reciprocation,” and advises that internships should be part of the intern’s course of study and offer practical, career-related experience.
