Pray For Japan App Stamps Ribbon On Your Facebook, Twitter Profile Pics

Show your support for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan today by putting a ‘Pray For Japan’ ribbon on your profile pictures on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and beyond. A San Diego-based Chamber of Commerce has launched a campaign to support victims of the massive disaster with an app that stamps a ‘Pray For Japan’ ribbon on any picture for you to display on your social networking profiles.

The Chamber’s CEO, Ed Herrera, said, “After first getting word about the tragedy, my stomach sank and I quickly went into prayer. I could not sleep knowing that this was happening. I wasn’t alone. Our Chief Technology Officer Timothy Barnes was just as distraught and awake. We couldn’t simply sit back and do nothing. We asked ourselves what can we do so many miles away? Over instant messaging, we began working on an application for social media which would allow users to upload their profile photos or icons and stamp those images with a “Pray for Japan” ribbon for display on their Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn profiles.”

The Pray For Japan Ribbon app is easy to use. Just head over to the website, upload a photo (they suggest an 800×800 pixel photo if you’ve got one), and click on ‘Generate Label’. The app will stamp your picture, which you can then download and upload to your social media profiles. Here’s how it looks when it’s done:

Because of the fact that the guys from the San Diego South Chamber of Commerce put this app together so quickly overnight, it lacks some of the social features that aided in the spreading of similar profile picture apps in the past, like the green overlay for the Iran election. But hopefully this campaign will be able to spread and more and more people will figure out how to show their support with a ribbon on their profile pictures.

The application page says, “Although no simple gesture of solidarity or awareness campaign can ever come close to lifting the heartache of the loss of precious lives, we must gather as a unified voice in prayer so that these disasters claim no more lives and that a nation and Earth be healed. Please support the Japanese victims with a “Pray for Japan” social media profile photo/icon ribbon.”

I think that even if you aren’t religious this is a great way to show that the people of Japan are in your thoughts and that you support them. Will you add a ribbon to your profile picture?
