Pope Francis: God Is Not a Wizard and Evolution Is Cool

POPE(BV)

Wrong book, sir.

Ever since Jorge Mario Bergoglio stepped down as Archbishop of Buenos Aires and the smoke cleared (literally) to proclaim him Bishop of Rome, the man now known as Pope Francis has become something of a legend.

There are many, many reasons for that mantle he carries, including becoming someone the PRNewserverse has dubbed “The Patron Saint of PR.” He has single-handedly forced the hand of the entire Catholic Church on issues his predecessors refused to consider — like shacking up, gay priests, the Internet, excommunication, and even working on the Sabbath.

Every time, he has been applauded. This week, however, he sided with Charles Darwin and the Catholic Church lost consciousness.

So there is the Pope, driving down St. Peter’s Basilica in his Toyota Prius Popemobile, waving at the spectators, when he suddenly slams on his breaks and makes an abrupt left turn.

At least, that is what millions of social conservatives are saying today about the Pontiff as he deliberately strayed from the centuries of the Holy See and made a rare flub in positive PR mojo.

“When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so,” the pope said at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, during a plenary meeting dedicated to evolving concepts of nature.

pope cryingWait, what?!

You have to remember that throughout its history the Papacy has risen and fallen, led many people to Christ and many others astray, been heavenly minded and up to no earthly good. To say that consistency has not been a strong suit of the Holy See is an understatement. However, it has been salient about John 1:1 (KJV):

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The “beginning” Pope Francis discussed was void of light until God spoke…or at least that’s what the Bible says. And now, Pope Francis appears to be having second thoughts on that illumination.

God “created human beings and let them develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one so they would reach their fulfillment,” the pope said. “Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.”

Now, I haven’t seen many Harry Potters making appearances at Christmas pageants, but this detour from intelligent design may have many people sitting in pews claiming progressive stupidity. (Cue headlines screaming that Francis might just be the ‘Antichrist’  in 3…2…1…)
