TechCrunch Andreessen Horowitz is one of the leaders among VCs building out the services that they offer to young companies beyond funding. The EIC role will see Sciarra potentially help Andreessen evaluate future investments, offer advice and assistance to its portfolio companies and perhaps even aid Andreessen Horowitz to be more disruptive in its own ventures. Better Connected: Twitter for BlackBerry (Twitter Blog) A new version of Twitter for BlackBerry introduces new features that make it easier to connect to the people and things you care about. When you tweet a link it will automatically be shortened so it takes up fewer characters, and you can upload photos to Twitter right from your device’s camera or when writing your Tweets. The Verge It adds BBM integration, either letting users set their latest tweet as their BBM Personal Message or access contacts' Twitter accounts directly through their BBM profiles. Groupon Hit As Analysts Question Model (MarketWatch) Groupon Inc. shares slid Monday as several Wall Street analysts questioned the stability of the company’s business following a revision of its fourth-quarter results. The revision, which took place late Friday afternoon, had Groupon lowering its reported revenue and earnings for the fourth quarter after the company found problems in the way it reserved for customer refunds. Bloomberg In response to the conclusion that the company’s internal controls contained a material weakness, Groupon said it’s been working for several months with an accounting firm and will report on the effectiveness of those controls by the end of the year. SocialTimes The problem is that a lot of businesses have not prepared themselves for the influx of customers, and the poor service has sometimes led to users demanding refunds. Another anecdotal reason for the refunds is that the deals are often so enticing that people begin to hoard massive numbers of deals, but then realize they probably won’t need to cash in on six massages in the next few months. Facebook for iPad Gets Retina Graphics (MacStories) The official Facebook app for iOS, available for free on the App Store, has been updated today to include graphics for the new iPad’s Retina display, and a series of other enhancements. Oakland Police Department Uses Twitter to Report on Oikos University Shooting (Mashable) At least five people were killed Monday when a gunman opened fire inside Oikos University, a private university in Oakland, Calif. The Oakland Police Department, as well as local media, took to Twitter to get the news out to the Oakland community. Wealthy Smartphone Users Less Likely to Play Games, Tweet (Reuters) Wealthier smartphone users are less likely to play games or tweet and will opt for news, travel or finance apps, according to a new study. The research by The Luxury Institute focused on app usage among wealthy consumers, who earn an annual income of $150,000 or more. They tend to be older, with a mean age of 52. You Know What's Cooler Than a Million Times Better? - Tumblr Integrates with Facebook (Tumblr Staff Blog) Sharing your posts on Facebook just got a billion times better, with integration into Facebook’s Timeline, News Feed and Ticker. You can find the new options in your blog settings. If your blog is already connected to Facebook, you’ll be automatically prompted to upgrade. The Next Web Services are starting to say that they’re seeing more traffic and engagement thanks to Facebook’s new Timeline, which is now mandatory for all pages and profiles on the social network. These new features will guarantee more traffic to Tumblr’s over 20 million pages of content. Facebook Tries Star Ratings, Home Page Requests to Push Users Toward Games (Inside Facebook) In a continued effort to drive users to play social games, Facebook reintroduced star ratings and homepage requests on the site last week. The social network now shows star ratings within game discovery modules on the right-hand side of pages and in the card that appears when users hover over the name of an app from within the News Feed. Facebook Loyalty Program Plink Gets $633K Investment (SocialTimes) Plink’s clients include Arby’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, Quiznos, Red Robin and Taco Bell. To earn Facebook Credits, users join Plink by logging on with their social network credentials and securely registering their credit or debit cards. The more people purchase at participating restaurants and retailers, the more Facebook Credits are earned.
