LA Times Photographers Score POYi Prizes

The folks at the annual photographer awards derby Pictures of the Year International (POYi), sponsored by the Missouri School of Journalism, are in the midst of a three-week cavalcade of honors. But only a few of the competition’s prizes are ranked as “premiere” awards.

Winners in the first two such awards categories for 2010 were announced Friday. LA Times photographer Michael Robinson Chavez scored second place in the “Photographer of the Year – Newspaper” bracket (behind The New York Times‘ Damon Winter), while colleague Barbara Davidson has been deemed winner of the Community Awareness Award for her work on the three-part LA Times series “Caught in the Crossfire.”
