Mattel Launches Pictionary For Facebook

One of the dangers of Facebook is that I can find myself sucked into spending too much time playing games. I went cold turkey in January and I've managed to stay on the wagon all year. But now I'm in danger - Mattel has just released a version of Pictionary for Facebook.

One of the dangers of Facebook is that I can find myself sucked into spending too much time playing games. I went cold turkey in January and I’ve managed to stay on the wagon all year. But now I’m in danger – Mattel has just released a version of Pictionary for Facebook.

Pictionary was one of my favorite games as a child. If you never played it, it’s a board game where you have to draw something to a time limit and your team mates guess what it is. It can be surprisingly challenging and fun!

The press release from Mattel says that the Facebook version is available to people in the UK. But I was able to connect from California so I’m not certain if there really are region controls or not. I didn’t actually launch a game because the friends list at the side was of all my Facebook friends rather than just the Facebook friends already using Pictionary and I didn’t want to spam anyone. Unlike games such as Scrabble or Backgammon on Facebook, it seems that you can only play against friends.

The digital adaptation is to mark Pictionary’s 25th anniversary. One of the limitations in the original board game is that you really need at least four people because it’s a team game. The Facebook version overcomes this challenge because you get points when your opponents guess your drawings, but your opponents also get points for guessing correctly.

Each player takes a turn to draw and the guessers can see the drawings in real time, so they can get points for guessing faster. That’s something that wouldn’t have been technically possible a few years ago. The main drawback is that it’s not as easy or fun to draw a picture with a mouse (or the touchpad on my laptop) as it is with pencil and paper.

The only other downside is that now that I’ve enabled the app, I might get addicted to Facebook games again!
