Humor was the theme of 19 percent of Bin Laden-related posts on Facebook and Twitter, including “Breaking News: Donald Trump Demands Osama Bin Laden’s Death Certificate.”

Conspiracy theories and hoaxes were next, at 17 percent, including debate over whether Bin Laden was actually dead, theories that the event was a government hoax, and questions about the lack of evidence, the body being buried at sea, and other red flags.

The remaining topics, according to PEJ, were: news of Bin Laden’s death, at 14 percent; sentiment that President Barack Obama deserves credit for the event, at 10 percent; pro-United States and pro-armed forces messages, at 8 percent; messages expressing fear and unease, at 6 percent; and sentiment that former...
