PBS Nabs Roll Call's Bellantoni for Politics Editor

Christina Bellantoni, a Harvard fellow and Roll Call's Associate Politics Editor, is leaving the publication for PBS to be the new Politics Editor for NewsHour. She will continue writing an occasional column for Roll Call. See the internal memos from Roll Call and PBS... From Scott Montgomery: We are sorry to announce that Christina Bellantoni is leaving Roll Call, though we’re proud to tell you where she’s going: Christina will be the new Politics Editor for NewsHour on PBS. It’s difficult to account for the impact Christina has had in just more than a year in the Roll Call newsroom. As our Associate Politics Editor, Christina helped build (and rebuild) a sharp politics reporting team, she drove our social media strategy and made CQ Roll Call synonymous with smart, clear-eyed analysis in countless television appearances. Also, she was a terrific editor and energetic reporter who never failed to offer her time, ideas or sources to any task at any time. It is fitting that Christina’s last day with us will be Dec. 31, New Years Eve, for which she volunteered to serve as web editor. As Politics Editor for another one of journalism’s most respected news brands, Christina will lead NewsHour’s political coverage, as well as supervise its justice, immigration and homeland security beats. But we are pleased to say our relationship with Christina will not end here. Christina will continue to write for CQ Roll Call, as an occasional political columnist. Details of this arrangement are still being ironed out, but we look forward to keeping the Bellantoni byline in our pages whenever we can. Also, beginning next summer, the Harvard Institute of Politics will place a summer intern with the Roll Call politics team in a deal Christina struck while she was a Fall fellow at the Institute. Although this intern will work in our newsroom, Christina will serve as a kind of off-site mentor for that program. Many of you may be familiar with her already, because she is a frequent political commentator on several different cable news outlets, as well as a compulsive social media communicator. When she arrives on January 2, the rest of you can discover for yourselves how knowledgeable and wise she is. I am thrilled that she is joining the NewsHour family. PBS NewsHour is pleased to announce that Christina Bellantoni of CQ Roll Call will join the staff as Political Editor, effective January 2, 2012. Ms. Bellantoni will oversee all coverage related to domestic political developments both on air and online, including on-air analysis of politics, elections and political figures. “Christina’s extensive Washington experience as a skilled, cross-platform journalist will make her a great asset to the NewsHour throughout the 2012 election cycle,” said Linda Winslow, Executive Producer of the PBS NEWSHOUR. “She understands the seismic shift that has changed the world of journalism and is eager to help us develop new sources and new ways to engage our audience through the use of social media." Bellantoni has spent over a decade covering national political and business news in Washington, DC and California. She has been Associate Politics Editor at CQ Roll Call since October 2010, and she has appeared regularly as political analyst on national television programs such as Hardball, Countdown, On the Record w/ Greta Van Susteren, Reliable Sources, TopLine, the Rachel Maddow show, and The Daily Rundown. Bellantoni was a senior reporter-blogger at Talking Points Memo's Washington bureau covering the White House and national politics from October 2009 through October 2010. Before joining TPM, Bellantoni was a White House correspondent for The Washington Times, a post she took after covering the 2008 presidential campaign. She joined the Times in December 2003, covering state and Congressional politics before moving to the national political beat for the 2008 election. A graduate of University of California, Berkeley, Bellantoni majored in mass communications, and was an Institute of Politics Fellow at the Kennedy School, Harvard University, in fall 2011. She won two national journalism awards for Best Scoop in 2001 for her story in Silicon Valley Biz Ink revealing the San Jose Sharks were up for sale.
