Overly Attached Girlfriend Uses Viral Fame To Raise Money For Charity

By now you’re probably familiar with the Overly Attached Girlfriend, the wide-eyed, stalker of Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen, Drake and others. Well now Laina Morris, the real girl behind the Overly Attached Girlfriend meme, has decided to use her YouTube viral fame for good. This week she launched a new YouTube Series, Dare To Share, in an effort to raise money for good causes.

The first episode of ‘Dare To Share’ was uploaded to YouTube yesterday.  In it, Morris explains that, “The Internet is a unifying force that brings the whole world together.  We’re more connected now than we have ever been, through things like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.  In today’s world, we are constantly connected.  Smartphones that go everywhere we do are notifying us every second.  It’s good—we can laugh together at funny videos of sneezing pandas, English brothers who bite each other’s fingers, and Overly Attached Girlfriends.  And it’s bad because people can do or say whatever they want when they’re hiding behind their computer.  But together, we can work to make it the most powerful method in helping others.”

With this in mind, she has launched ‘Dare To Share,’ which will work as follows—viewers will dare Morris to do crazy things, and she’ll follow through as money is raised for a different charity each month.

The first month’s charity is Surf Camp, an organization that works with kids that have Autism.  So far, $12,404 has been raised on the way to a $50,000 goal.  As money is raised, Morris will do the following crazy dares:

  • $1,000 – Drink a blend of five edible foods chosen by a friend, without knowing what’s in it
  • $5,000 – Dance Gangnam Style in the Apple Store as a flash mob and have everyone join along
  • $10,000 – Eat as much food as humanly possible and then ride the biggest rollercoaster Morris can find (note: she is deathly afraid of rollercoasters)
  • $50,000 – Skydiving!

So far it looks like we’re well on track to seeing the Overly Attached Girlfriend go skydiving.  Morris says, “I have over 100,000 followers on Twitter.  I have about 200,000 followers on Facebook and subscribers on YouTube.  If half of you donate a dollar—if all of you donate $0.50, it would be absolutely no problem to raise $50,000, and if we raise $50,000 that would help Surf Camp for years!”
