Omnicom's OMD media group has made two senior appointments: Ben Winkler, director of digital at IPG’s Initiative media network, as chief digital officer, and Colin Sutton, managing director at Group M's social arm M80, who becomes director of the agency’s social offering, OMD Word.
Winkler succeeds Erin Matts, who left to take a senior digital role at Anheuser-Busch.
Sutton's role is considered new as it has been significantly expanded and elevated beyond the scope of the previous social lead.
At Initiative, Winkler had oversight for the interactive marketing efforts for many of the agency’s flagship clients like Bayer, USAA, and Hitachi. Digital new business wins under his watch include Verizon Telecom, USAA, and Hasbro. Winkler previously worked at The Martin Agency, where he was vp, interactive media, and i33 Communications, as media director. He begins his OMD role on May 9.
At M80, Sutton built and managed a 20-member social activation team and led the social media pitch efforts for global business totaling over $1 billion. The brands he was involved with at M80 include Microsoft, Audi, and GlaxoSmithKline. Sutton was also part of the team behind the decision, earlier this year, to release Volkswagen’s "The Force" commercial on YouTube in the days before its Super Bowl airing, which garnered more than 12.5 million views, 10,000 comments, and 62,000 ‘likes’ four hours before the football game started. Sutton’s appointment is effective immediately.
