Mark 2017 as the year The New York Times officially went all in on podcasts. According to Politico, the paper plans to add five new programs this year, bringing the total to 12.
Times associate editor Sam Dolnick said the goal behind launching new shows, as usual, is to get more people to subscribe to the paper.
“In text, reporters are just grey bylines that most people may not even notice,” Dolnick explained. “But in audio, our reporters become personalities, your friends, your guides, and we think the loyalty that engenders will draw people deeper into the New York Times ecosystem.”
Correction (9:15 am):
An earlier version of this post stated that the Times was adding 12 new podcasts. It is only adding five, for a total of 12. We regret the error.
