Facebook’s Notify App Notifies Users of Its Demise

Facebook launched Notify in November, but on Thursday, Notify users saw a different type of notification—one alerting them to the app’s impending shutdown.

Facebook launched its stand-alone Notify application in November, but on Thursday, Notify users began receiving a different type of notification—one alerting them to the app’s impending shutdown.

Thursday’s no-more-Notify notification read:

Thanks for using Notify. We’re transitioning parts of Notify into other Facebook products, and the app will no longer be supported.

Not surprisingly, those “other Facebook products” mainly refer to Messenger and that app’s recently introduced bots. The social network shared the following statement with The Verge:

Since launching Notify, we’ve learned a lot about how to make notifications as timely and relevant as possible, and we heard from people using the app that Notify helped them stay informed about things they cared about throughout the day. With more than 900 million people using Messenger each month, we think there is a great opportunity for publishers to reach even more people interested in real-time updates from their favorite sources.

The app allowed users to choose from 72 content providers, referred to as channels, and customize the topics they wished to receive notifications about. Product manager Julian Gutman said in a November Newsroom post announcing its launch:

To create your personal mix of notifications you select the stations from which you want to receive updates. Sources … will publish notifications through these stations when there are relevant updates. Notify also provides station suggestions based on your Facebook profile, and it’s easy to discover and add new stations any time.

You’ll receive notifications, delivered right to your lock screen, and a quick glance will keep you connected to the things that you care about throughout the day. If you want to see more, just swipe or tap through any Notify notification to open the link in the app’s browser where you can read the full article, watch the video, or view the site.
