Norm Clarke’s Life Is Once Again All About Journalism

A short-lived retirement for the chronicler of all things Las Vegas

The liveliest personal details are buried towards the end of Daniel Funt’s profile for CJR of Norm Clarke, the longtime Las Vegas Review-Journal gossip columnist who has re-upped on Facebook, his own personal website and now, the Vegas Sports Information Network (VSiN). His dogs are named Rumor and Scandal! And his wife of four years, Cara Roberts, is someone he first met as a tipster, when he was a journalist in Denver!!

There’s also, quite possibly, the best measure of a gossip journalist’s career, uttered by Clarke about halfway through. “You haven’t lived until you’ve had Joe Pesci chew your ass out,” Clarke says. That happened because of this:

At an anniversary party for the Las Vegas run of Jersey Boys, which chronicles the rise of the Four Seasons, Clarke bumped into one of the original band members, Tommy DeVito. Asked if he still keeps in touch with Pesci, a childhood friend, DeVito said they planned on opening some pizza parlors together. Clarke ran the scoop, then got a call: “Where the F did you get that story about the F-ing pizza stores?” he imitates Pesci huffing in his heavy Jersey accent.

Clarke battled cancer for many years before retiring from the Review-Journal and says the medication he is currently using to manage his condition is the best he’s been on in 15 years. But he got emotional when talking to Funt about the possibility that the disease could return.

There’s a nice bio of Clarke on the VSiN website, a project he was drawn into by stakeholder Brent Musberger. The 74-year-old journalist’s latest, March 10 dispatch involves the possible relocation to Sin City of the Oakland Raiders.
