Each month’s Community Day event will last for just three hours, and it will give players the chance to capture a “special Pokemon” that knows an exclusive battle move. For January, players will have the chance to capture a special version of Pikachu that knows the move Surf.
On top of featuring a special Pokemon, Niantic said each Community Day event will give players access to “other bonuses,” such as increased Stardust or Lure Modules that remain active for three hours. January’s event will see players earn double experience points throughout its duration.
January’s Community Day event will take place Jan. 20. The event’s hours are broken down by region below.
- Asia-Pacific: noon to 3 p.m. JST
- Europe, Middle East, Africa and India: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. UTC
- The Americas and Greenland: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. PST
In addition to revealing the game’s first Community Day event, Niantic also announced that Kyogre, a Water-type Legendary Pokemon, is now appearing in Raid Battles around the world. Kyogre will be available to battle and capture until Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. PST.
Pokemon Go is available to download for free on iOS and Android. The game has been downloaded more than 750 million times, and it has driven more than 500 million visits to sponsored locations since its launch in July 2016.
Last year, Niantic partnered with Wieden + Kennedy London to launch an advertising campaign for Pokemon Go, which saw billboards containing gameplay stats appear in London, Tokyo and New York. As part of this campaign, some of these billboards were turned into in-game PokeStops.
