Is YouTube Rolling Out A New Video Player?

Over the past year or so, YouTube has made a number of changes to their video player. In April 2010, they rolled out a new design, in August of last year they updated their post screen, and just weeks ago they began offering a new logoless player for embeds. Now it seems that YouTube is at it again, rolling out a brand new video player design. Earlier this morning, Techie Buzz reported that YouTube has begun to roll out a sleek new video player. The new YouTube player, which was revealed in a screenshot on the Techie Buzz post, darkens things up a bit with a dark grayish-black skin. We’ve put the old player and new player next to each other in the image below, so you can compare. According to Techie Buzz, "The roll out began a short while back, and doesn’t seem to be restricted to any specific region." We haven’t heard from anyone who has been upgraded to the new player at this time, but would love you hear from you in the comments if you have. I reached out to Jacques Hebert at YouTube's Global Communications & Public Affairs. He told me, "We are constantly running numerous experiments on YouTube, including with the YouTube player. The version of the YouTube player that you are referencing is an experiment targeting a select number of users. With any experiment, we may roll the feature out more broadly depending on feedback and performance." Let us know what you think! Do you like how the new player looks?
