Daily News Adds Deputy Head of News, Digital Long-Form Team

Memo from Jim Rich heralds the arrival of Clemente Lisi, Joe Angio and Shaun King.

There’s a ton of info in the memo that just went out to New York Daily News staff from executive editor Jim Rich (pictured). In the wake of all those recent veteran journalist layoffs, the paper is adding a deputy head of news, a senior justice writer and a digital long-form team guided by another new hire.

Here’s the full memo:

All,

I am pleased to announce the creation of some exciting new positions, along with a couple of key appointments.

Shaun King, most recently of The Daily Kos, will join us in the newly created role of Senior Justice Writer. Shaun’s writing on social inequality, police brutality and race relations in America has been some of the best work done in the country. His passion and attention to detail on topics that are of critical importance to our readers – both online and in print – make him a perfect fit for the Daily News. He will remain based in Atlanta and begin writing for us full time on Oct. 15.

Joe Angio, former editor-in-chief of Time Out New York and an award-winning documentary filmmaker, will be the editor of our new digital long-form team. Joe will lead a team of six in producing magazine-quality pieces on national and local issues – ranging from serious to lighthearted – that will engage our online audience in new and provocative ways.

Bruce Diamond will serve as Joe’s deputy. Bruce’s steady hand in the newsroom, his deft touch as an editor and his experience on both the print and digital products at the Daily News will be invaluable to this new project.

Andy Martino and Eric Barrow will work on this new team as senior writers. Eric and Andy are not only fantastic writers, but top-notch reporters who think beyond traditional means of storytelling. Their work here will be must-read material.

The long-form team will begin on Oct. 5 and will work in closely with Sarah Ryley’s data team. Joe will fill out his roster with two other writers in the near future.

Clemente Lisi will join us as deputy head of news. Clemente, a Senior Editor at ABC News Digital and a former Deputy Editor at the NY Post, brings a wealth of experience and an unmatched tabloid news sense. He will report to Rob Moore, who becomes the Head of News.

Zach Haberman becomes Head of Content. Rob and Zach will continue to drive our hard-hitting coverage online and in print.

Clemente will begin on Oct. 19. Rob and Zach’s appointments are effective immediately.

Please join me in welcoming and congratulating all of the above.

– Jim Rich

Haberman, who has been with the Daily News since October 2012, was previously the deputy head of content.
