The City of New York launched its second annual #LoveNYC Instagram and Twitter photo contest, this time expanding its reach to Facebook since the social network started using hashtags.
Residents can upload their photos showcasing their favorite aspects of the city’s five boroughs under the hashtag #LoveNYC for a chance to serve as an “Instagram Ambassador” for the city’s official Instagram account. The city will pick the top four photos from each borough to display in a digital exhibit at the New York Public Library in late September.
Last year’s contest garnered 2,000 submissions, but the city expects more this time by including Facebook users and leading the campaign with Instagram.
Facebook Strategic Partner Manager Libby Leffler commented on the contest:
We are thrilled to see Instagram take on such a prominent role in the #LoveNYC contest. Instagram is all about capturing and sharing life’s moments with authentic and engaging content.
A panel of judges will narrow the submissions to four per borough, then the public will vote for the top photos on Facebook, naming one Instagram ambassador per borough. Photos snapped by those elected ambassadors will get featured periodically on the city’s official social media channels throughout the summer.
Judges include a range of library, city and community leaders as well as media personalities and artists, including Artsy founder Carter Cleveland, The Mobile Media Lab co-founder Liz Eswein and Humans of New York founder and photog Brandon Stanton, who discussed his excitement for this contest:
I know from experience how unique New Yorkers are, and I’m looking forward to see how they’ll share their different views and perspectives of the city. This contest will be a fun and innovative way to see how New Yorkers choose to express themselves.
