New York City Council To Consider Bill Protecting Employees’ Facebook Accounts
The New York City Council will consider a bill, introduced by Councilwoman Annabel Palma (D-Bronx), to ban employers from demanding access to the social media accounts of their employees and potential employees, the New York Daily News reported.

The largest city in the U.S. may follow the lead of several states that have already enacted similar legislation.
The bill would not ban employers from accessing information stored on company computers, or publicly available information, the newspaper reported.
Brooklyn Law School graduate Sarah DeStefano, who plans to testify at the City Council hearing Wednesday, told the Daily News an upstate district attorney’s office refused to hire her after she would not become Facebook friends with her potential boss, adding:
Why should an employer have access to all this information? There’s a line that employers shouldn’t be able to cross.
