English enthusiasts rejoice! A very simple, highly addictive, and surprisingly useful online game was introduced this week. Z-type, an HTML5 video game, exclusively uses the keyboard and forces the gamer to type as fast as possible. With a setup reminiscent of Asteroids, words falls slowly from the top of the screen in varying numbers with the goal to blast them away by typing out the word.
Apt background music, smooth game flow, and exploding letters make the test enjoyable, but it is the simple challenge of typing that creates a most addictive program. Don’t try and get too ahead of yourself though. The game can keep up with speedy typists, but if at any point you miss a letter, you can’t jump to a new word.
Waves go by quickly, but before long wrinkles and quirks are thrown into the game to keep on your toes (or fingers as it may be). The game works on mobile devices such as the iPad and iPhone, and if you are playing at work, the sound can be muted and a simple press of the escape key will pause the game and let you get out. One added bonus: the excessive typing without ever having to backspace will make it appear to others as if you’re working really hard and efficiently.
Z-Type is a great way to kill words and time throughout the day and night. This gamer and English major has yet to find the end, but the journey as always is the most fun – as long as you know when to stop.
