Which Company Is Streaming 61% Of All Online Movies?

Where do you turn when you want to stream movies online? If you answered Netflix then you answered on par with three-fifths of the population.

Where do you turn when you want to stream movies online? If you answered Netflix then you answered on par with three-fifths of the population. Netflix has basically put their online movie streaming competition in a chokehold. 61% of all movies being streamed online are being streamed or downloaded from Netflix, says market research company NPD’s VideoWatch.

Peter Kafka reported on NPD’s findings earlier today on All Things Digital. Kafka says that these stats shouldn’t be surprising. “Netflix is in the midst of a go-go growth book, and while not all of its 20 million subscribers are using the company’s Web video service, many of them are. And a third of its new customers are signing up for its Web-only option.”

NPD’s VideoWatch reported the following:

“According to a recent review of the home video market in the U.S. by The NPD Group, a leading market research company, Netflix’s share of digital movie units, download or streamed, reached 61 percent between January 2011 and February 2011, followed by Comcast at 8 percent, and a three-way tie for third at 4 percent among DirecTV, Time Warner Cable, and Apple. Based on information from NPD’s new VideoWatch Digital tracking service, digital video now makes up one quarter of all home video volume.”

The entertainment industry analyst for NPD said that “digital movie buyers do not believe physical discs are out of fashion, but their digital transactions were motivated by the immediate access and ease of acquisition provided by streaming and downloading digital video files.” Of course, this motivation was a driving factor in the downfall of Blockbuster, brought on by the success of services like Netflix and Comcast.

Netflix’s 61% topples over Comcast’s 8%, truly cementing its spot as King of online movie streaming. I would be interested, however, to find out how television series streaming compares to the video stats. Comcast and Hulu might have a little bit of a heads up on Netflix in this department, though NPD’s stats don’t provide any information about online video streams aside from movies.

Are you surprised by the fact that Netflix accounts for 6 out of 10 digital movie streams? Where do you stream movies online?
