As the World Cup, the biggest event in soccer, approaches, Facebook decided to share some interesting stats about soccer fans on its platform.
Of the 1.2 billion people on Facebook, some 500 million of them are soccer fans (people who have liked a soccer player or a soccer team), making it the largest stadium in the world. In the U.S. alone, 48.9 million people are soccer fans, the second highest number for any country after Brazil, which has 53.8 million soccer fans on Facebook.
Other highlights include:
- In the U.S., 35 percent of soccer fans in the U.S. are ages 18-24; 25 percent are 25-34.
- In the U.S. 62 percent of soccer fans were on Facebook every day of a recent week.
- Compared to the average person on Facebook in the U.S., soccer fans post 1.7x more photos, send 1.9x more messages, post 1.8x more updates, upload 1.7x more videos and make 1.7x more comments.
- During a soccer match in March, U.S. soccer fans took 16.8 million actions related to the game, including posts, likes, comments and shares; 89 percent of these actions were made on mobile phones and most took place at the beginning of the game or when either team scored a goal.
