Reader-submitted photos have been a regular feature of National Geographic for some time, enjoying visibility both online and in glossy print. One of the avenues through which photos are chosen is Your Shot, a community set up for the magazine’s amateur and professional photograpy fans, where assignments are doled out and photos submitted, commented upon and, for a lucky few, chosen.
Your Shot recently posted its plummest assignment yet. In a first for National Geographic Traveler, editors will feature a user-submitted photo on the cover of the December 2015/January 2016 issue. Submissions are being accepted on Your Shot for an image that embodies the Best of the World theme of the issue.
“This is the first time any National Geographic publication has asked readers to shoot a cover photo, and I’m thrilled that Traveler is offering the opportunity to the talented Your Shot community,” said editor in chief Margaret Zackowitz in a statement.
Submissions are being accepted until Sept 22. To date, over 2500 photos have been submitted. Editors’ top pics, with annotations, will go up on the Your Shot site when the assignment ends. The winner will be announced in November.
