It started with a personal connection. Naomi Campbell’s manager is a friend of Steven Fernandez, editor of Kiwi fashion magazine Remix. So he sent over a copy along with the idea of the supermodel covering the December “ICONS” issue.
That overture led to an eventual photo shoot, conducted late last month in New York, with Fernandez and publisher Tim Phin flying in. From a report by Stuff’s Ashley Ropati:
“Shooting someone like Naomi is a lot of work, not because she’s difficult, but because she’s incredibly well-versed at what she does, so everything had to be perfect,” says Fernandez.
“This is a woman who has covered Vogue 66 times, shooting for the likes of Steven Meisel and Mario Testino, every other month,” he said. “We shot at a studio in New York’s West Village and flew in Brazilian photographer Gui Paganini from Sao Paolo to shoot her.”
The December issue will feature a 10-page spread on Campbell. On the day of the photo shoot, Campbell had an evening engagement at The White House, which Fernandez says added some unique time pressures. We look forward to seeing the cover.
Update (Nov. 27):
Here’s the December issue cover. In the cover story Q&A with Fernandez, Campbell covers a range of topics including her new Taschen books, charity efforts and relationships with today’s class of Instagram stars. There are also two more color photos and four black and whites.
