MSNBC Opens Up @BreakingNews to Local News Organizations

MSNBC Digital Network-owned BreakingNews.com added a “Spot” tab in November, allowing users to upload tweets, photos, and videos. Now, the site is taking crowdsourcing one step further, allowing news organizations on its list to fast-track breaking news via tweet by including @breakingnews or #breakingnews within the text.

Editors will choose breaking news stories of regional or national interest and push them directly to the homepage, the @BreakingNews Twitter feed, the Breaking News Facebook page and its mobile apps.

BreakingNews.com said more than 40 news organizations (local TV stations and newspapers) have opted in to the program, and interested organizations can apply via this form.

From the Inside Breaking News blog:

For the news organization, that means a burst of traffic and perhaps a few new Twitter followers. For us, it helps BreakingNews find stories faster (we receive a daily avalanche of Twitter replies and mentions) and give credit where credit is due. All we ask is that the tips stick to original breaking stories that have a regional or national interest. Our goal is to link the source of breaking stories, not rewritten copies of it.
