CBS, PBS Lead Nominations for News And Documentary Emmys (TheWrap) CBS led the way with 46 nominations, followed closely by PBS with 45, as the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 34th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards on Thursday. TVNewser 60 Minutes is the most-nominated program, with 24 nominations, followed by Frontline with 18. CBS Evening News secured 10 noms, with Nightline leading ABC and Dateline leading NBC with five nominations each. CBS This Morning, in its first year nominated, secured seven nominations, while GMA and Today each secured one. TVSpy Eight local stations have been nominated for News and Documentary Emmys. WBZ, WMAQ and WNBC were nominated for Outstanding Regional News Story in the Spot News category, and KING, KNXV, WABC, WTTG and WXYZ in Detroit were nominated for Outstanding Regional News Story in the Investigative Reporting category. THR The Emmys will be handed out Oct. 1 in New York City. Seven Layoffs at GOOD (Poynter / MediaWire) GOOD laid off seven employees Wednesday, CEO Ben Goldhirsh told Poynter in a phone call. Two employees, creative producer Ewan Anderson and coder Rexy Tseng, tweeted Wednesday night that they'd been laid off. GOOD laid off most of its editorial staff last June and was reborn last fall as a "community platform." Pew Study: Fewer Americans Think Journalists Contribute to Society (TVSpy) The Pew Research Center asked Americans to rate certain professions by their perceived contribution to society. While the military ranked highest with more than three-quarters of Americans (78 percent) saying they think the Armed Forces contribute “a lot” to society, journalists came in near the bottom with just 28 percent saying the press contribute “a lot.” That number is down 10 percent from 2009, when 38 percent of Americans viewed journalists positively. Sherri Shepherd 'Really Depressed' About Elisabeth Hasselbeck Leaving The View (TMZ) They may not have always gotten along -- sometimes they may have hated each other -- but Sherri Shepherd says she's really gonna miss her friend Elisabeth Hasselbeck on The View. Shepherd says she's excited to work with Liz's possible replacement, Jenny McCarthy -- who will undoubtedly "cause some stuff" on the show. McCarthy hasn't been confirmed as her replacement but judging from Shepard's reaction, it sounds like the deal is just about locked up. (NYT / Public Editor's Journal) One of the latest developments in the Edward Snowden saga is the question of whether Snowden -- as was suggested in a Times article on June 24 -- may have unwittingly provided classified information to China. “It’s Monday morning quarterbacking,” Times foreign editor, Joseph Kahn said, but the Times could have added a sentence that made it clear that the sources did not have direct, specific information of what happened with Snowden’s laptops. Two sentences in the middle of a Times article on such a sensitive subject -- though they may be off the central point -- have the power to sway the discussion or damage a reputation. Andrew Goldman Is Leaving 'Talk' Post at New York Times Magazine (Capital New York) The New York Times Magazine is getting a new columnist for its weekly Q & A feature. Andrew Goldman, the writer on its most recent incarnation, "Talk," bid farewell to fans on Twitter Thursday and said that his column in the most recent issue, an interview with Marcia Gay Harden, was his last. In October of last year, Goldman was temporarily suspended from the column after a fight with writer Jennifer Weiner in which he made comments on Twitter that the Times public editor called "insulting and profane" at the time. Max Seddon, of The Associated Press, has been tapped as the site's first foreign correspondent. The hire comes just one month after Miriam Elder announced that she would join the site as its foreign editor. Can Barnes & Noble Be Saved? (Publisher's Weekly) It's been a rough week for Barnes & Noble. And month. And year. And it may get worse before (if) it gets better. The biggest problem that Barnes & Noble has right now is time. Time is not its friend. It has a gunshot wound and the Band-Aids that have been applied will not save it, but will only slow its death. Journalists Quit Trinidad Newspaper in Press Freedom Crisis (The Guardian / Greenslade Blog) A major crisis has broken out at the Trinidad Guardian, the leading newspaper in Trinidad and Tobago. Three of the paper's senior journalists have resigned in protest at alleged editorial interference by its owners. Their walk-out followed their belief that the Guardian's editor-in-chief, Judy Raymond, had been effectively stripped of her newsroom powers. She has remained with the paper, however.
