World News Tonight With David Muir Gets First Overall Weekly Win in 6 Years (TVNewser) With the latest Nielsen evening news ratings released Tuesday, ABC’s World News Tonight With David Muir had its first outright win in six years. The ABC evening newscast finished first among the two younger demos, adults 25-54 and adults 18-49, and breaks the five-year total viewer winning streak held by NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams. TVNewser While Muir’s show was up 10 percent in viewers and up 16 percent in the demo compared to the same week last year, Williams’ broadcast was down 3 percent in viewers and down 13 percent in the demo. Deadline Hollywood It was ABC’s ninth consecutive newscast win in the news demo. ABC’s newscast clocked 8.416 million viewers, 2.204 million news demo viewers, and 1.528 million 18-49-year-old viewers for the week. NBC’s newscast logged 8.250 million viewers, 1.937 million news demo viewers and 1.416 million younger viewers. Scott Pelley-anchored CBS Evening News trailed with 6.614 million viewers, including 1.602 million in the news demo and 1.147 million aged 18-49. Variety There’s no telling whether ABC will be able to duplicate the feat in coming weeks. In the recently completed 2013-2014 TV season, Nightly News had its best viewer delivery in eight years and enjoyed a large advantage over both ABC and CBS. And Nightly News typically out-muscles World News among younger viewers, those between 18 and 49. But ABC has been pressing its advantage in the 25-to-54 demo for weeks and has been eating into NBC’s advantage in that category. In May, under Diane Sawyer, World News won the May sweep among viewers between 25 and 54 -- the first time the newscast had done so in seven years. NYT In 2012, ABC also ended a long winning streak for NBC in the morning when its Good Morning America toppled the Today show. AOL Hires Viacom’s Dermot McCormack as Head of Video as Ran Harnevo Exits (Variety) AOL has tapped Viacom exec Dermot McCormack as president of its video division, replacing Ran Harnevo, who is leaving the company to pursue other opportunities. THR Harnevo has been with AOL since 2010 when the company acquired his Web-video startup 5Min Media. McCormack will lead AOL On, the company's 14 video channels, and BE On, AOL's branded-content platform as well as the company's original programming division AOL Studios. Re/code Executive departures at AOL aren’t uncommon, but Harnevo’s is worth noting because he was a key part of the company’s recent success in video. When he joined in 2010, AOL’s video revenue was in the “tens of millions”; two years later it had topped $100 million. Now an AOL spokesman says it is in the “multiple hundreds of millions” -- it’s reasonable to assume that means at least $300 million. WSJ / CMO Today Advertisers seem to have responded. AOL also claims to have sold 10 of 16 of this year’s new crop of originals series to advertisers following its “NewFront” presentation last spring. AOL is making hundreds of millions from its Web video businesses overall, say people familiar with the matter. When it comes to content, McCormack said he wants to focus on building upon AOL’s budding successes with celebrity-driven reality shows, while also looking to uncover new Web-born talents -- the likes of which are flourishing on YouTube. Knight Foundation Names VP of Journalism (FishbowlNY) Jennifer Preston, the New York Times’ first social media editor, has been tapped by the Knight Foundation to serve as its VP of journalism. Last week, ratings showed that Fox News Channel was the most watched network on weekday primetime basic cable during the same quarter. According to Nielsen Media Research, during primetime for the past year, FNC ranked in the top five highest-rated networks in all of cable 96 percent of the time. Mashable After months of attempted negotiations, the company filed a lawsuit on Tuesday, alleging that the restrictions imposed by the government -- which regulate what Twitter can publish about national security related surveillance requests -- violate its First Amendment rights. The Washington Post In a post-Edward Snowden world in which technology companies are striving to reassure customers about their commitment to privacy, Twitter is pressing for the ability to be more candid in its twice-a-year transparency reports than the government has been willing to permit. Tech firms may now report the numbers of requests they receive from the government in broad bands -- such as zero to 999, for instance. Twitter would like to be able to disclose the exact number of national security-related orders received in any particular category -- including zero, if that is the case. Fox Buying Station in Seattle Market (TVSpy) Fox Television Stations is buying KBCB in Bellingham, Wash. from World Television and Venture Technologies Group for $10 million. Tribune, which owns Seattle Fox affiliate KCPQ, recently issued a statement saying Fox told the station group it was going to pull the affiliation by Jan. 17, 2015. Seattle has an NFL team in the National Football Conference which Fox has a contract to air. Removing the middle man, in this case Tribune, can increase the amount of ad dollars Fox can earn by airing the games.
