More than 131.6 million are expected to shop this Cyber Monday on Dec. 2, according to the National Retail Federation, even after about 141 million shopped their way through Thanksgiving deals from Thursday through Sunday. That would be a little less than a 2 percent improvement over last year’s 129 million Cyber Monday shoppers.
More than one in five, or 24.8 million, of those who plan to shop on the annual mega-online sale day plan to use a mobile device, NRF said. That’s a 22 percent jump from last year for mobile shopping.
While in-store holiday sales continue to dwarf online and mobile sales, it’s the latter that are growing faster. Overall Thanksgiving weekend sales were modest–a 2.3 percent gain over the prior year, but online sales for Thanksgiving alone jumped 20%. This nifty Washington Post via comScore chart shows Cyber Monday sales tripling over less than a decade.
The survey was conducted Nov. 29 to 30 by Prosper Insights & Analytics on behalf of NRF. It polled 4,464 consumers and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 1.5 percent.
