Miller on Good Morning America

Follow this timeline and determine for yourself who can claim the “exclusive” Judy Miller interview.

Yesterday afternoon:
Lou Dobbs announces that he will interview Miller at 6:40pm on “Lou Dobbs Tonight.”

6:39pm: ABC teases a clip of an interview (already conducted that afternoon) with Miller, to be played tomorrow morning on “Good Morning America.”

6:40pm:
Dobbs conducts interview with Miller.

This morning:
Miller’s taped interview airs on “Good Morning America.”

Our head is spinning. You decide.

Both the Dobbs and GMA interview lead us to conclude two things:

1.) Judy Miller clearly sees her affair much differently than most everyone else (it may turn out that she has good reason for that)
2.) So far, she’s definitely choosing to participate only in Q&As conducted by really-Judy-friendly interviewers (both Dobbs and Walters seem downright smitten with Miller).

Some interesting tidbits from Miller’s interview with Barbara Walters on “Good Morning America”:

[Walters] MR. LIBBY’S LAWYER SAID HE GAVE YOU PERMISSION TO REVEAL
YOUR SOURCE BEFORE YOU WENT TO JAIL. IN OTHER WORDS, YOU DIDN’T HAVE TO GO TO JAIL.

[Miller] NO. THE BLANKET WAIVERS — MR. LIBBY’S LAWYER SAID WEREN’T WORTH THE PAPER THEY WERE PRINTED ON. A BLANKET WAIVER IS A BOSS OR A
PROSECUTOR ASKS YOU TO SIGN. PRESIDENT BUSH AND PATRICK FITZGERALD, THE SPECIAL COUNSEL ASKED EVERYONE ON THE PRESIDENT’S AND VICE PRESIDENT’S STAFF TO SIGN THESE WAIVERS AND I FELT AND STILL FEEL THAT THESE WAIVERS ARE COERCIVE. IF YOUR BOSS ASKS YOU TO DO SOMETHING, IS THAT REALLY VOLUNTARY? I WOULDN’T ACCEPT THAT. I WANTED TO HEAR FROM MY SOURCE.

[Walters] WHEN YOU WENT INTO JAIL, YOUR SOURCE, MR. LIBBY DID NOT THEN GIVE YOU HIS PERSONAL WAIVER.

[Miller] HE WOULD NOT GIVE IT TO ME PERSONALLY, NO, HE DID NOT.

[Walters] UNTIL JUST LAST WEEK WHEN FINALLY IT HAPPENED.

    [Miller] THAT’S RIGHT…

…BUT I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THAT I NEEDED NOT ONLY A PERSONAL WAIVER FROM MR. LIBBY, I NEEDED AN AGREEMENT FROM THE SPECIAL COUNSEL, THAT IS THE PROSECUTOR IN THIS CASE THAT HE WASN’T GOING TO ASK ME ABOUT EVERY SOURCE I EVER HAD IN NATIONAL SECURITY. WHEN I TRIED TO GET THAT ASSURANCE, WHEN MY LAWYERS TRIED TO GET THAT ASSURANCE BEFORE I WENT TO JAIL, THE SPECIAL PROSECUTOR SAID NO.

Re: her potential NYT expose piece…

[Walters] DID MR. LIBBY REVEAL VALERIE PLAME WILSON’S NAME TO YOU?

[Miller] I’M AFRAID I CAN’T GET INTO THAT, BARBARA. IT INVOLVES GRAND JURY TESTIMONY AND IF AND WHEN PEOPLE READ THAT, I HOPE THEY WILL READ IT IN THE NEW YORK TIME.

On life in jail…

[Miller] I THINK I HAD FOUR HOURS OF FRESH AIR IN 85 DAYS

    [Walters] WHERE DID YOU SLEEP?

[Miller] ON A CONCRETE SLAB OR ON THE FLOOR WITH A VERY THIN YOGA LIKE MAT ON THE CONCRETE SLAB…

…I REMEMBER SINGING HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY HUSBAND THROUGH
    THE GLASS.
