Miley Cyrus launched #Instapride today on Instagram, a two-week joint venture with the photo site that will share stories about transgender and “gender expansive” people. Details were revealed with the post above in the caption:
mileycyrus I’m launching #InstaPride today, in partnership with @Instagram, to share stories of transgender and gender expansive people from around the country. Over the next 2 weeks, you’ll meet them and the people in their lives who support them, as we highlight their stories of resilience #happyhippiepresents @happyhippiefdn
It wasn’t so long ago that Miley was the object of either ridicule or contempt. From her shocking music videos to her controversial stage performances, it seemed like all she was interested in was getting attention for attention’s sake. Why else would you ride a hot dog right?
But last year, things took a serious turn when Cyrus surprised us all by sending a homeless young man to the stage at the VMAs to accept her award for the Wrecking Ball video. His speech shed light on the plight of homeless youth. The response to the speech and Cyrus was seemingly all positive.
Since then, the number of antics have decreased (though not entirely disappeared) but her activism has increased. Cyrus gave an interview in this month’s Paper magazine (careful with the NSFW pics) in which she talks about her sexuality; she considers herself “gender fluid.” She identifies that VMA moment as one that impacted her deeply, and even says the death of her dog at the hands of a coyote prompted her to stop eating meat.
And she’s launched the Happy Hippie Foundation to work with LGBT youth. In other words, she’s become a legitimate and- with her in-your-face style and fame- powerful voice on the issues affecting her own generation. She’s one of those people who you can really say did it “on her own terms” too.
Cyrus is still capable of being shocking, but she has a proven will for standing up for the causes she believes in. Below is the man behind the balloons, Leo, a 19-year-old student from Michigan. You can read more about Leo’s biography in that Mashable link above.
