Gemalto introduced its Facebook SIM card in February 2011, giving feature-phone users the opportunity to access the social network from any type of handset, without data subscriptions or application downloads. And now, Facebook Messenger is part of the mix.

The digital security firm announced the addition of Messenger to its Facebook for SIM client/server SIM app for mobile operators, enabling users to launch the app automatically when turning on their handsets and begin chatting immediately.

Users will also receive interactive notifications on their screens when new messages arrive, and they can adjust their settings to sign in automatically.

Gemalto Senior Vice President of Mobile Solutions and Services Jean-François Schreiber said in a release announcing the addition of Messenger:

Facebook for SIM is achieving proven user engagement — on average six times higher than other mobile apps for non-data phones.
