Facebook would not confirm that it was testing or developing a Messenger for Mac desktop app, telling Constine, “We don’t comment on rumor or speculation.”
According to Constine, a dedicated Messenger for Mac app would be accessible directly via the Mac’s dock, rather than forcing users to launch Web browsers first.
The social network released Facebook Messenger for Windows in December 2011, officially launching it in March 2012 and saying at that time that it was working on a Mac version of the app.
However, that Mac app never surfaced, and Facebook pulled the plug on Messenger for Windows in March 2014.
