That is, until Twitter announced Periscope, which has since become the media darling. Both apps are brand new and rose to prominence at the same time; both represent a new era and are in a race to dominate the future of mobile livestreaming.
According to data from social media intelligence firm Wayin, Periscope and Meerkat are neck-and-neck, in terms of URLs created through the apps. However, the data also indicates that while Periscope is picking up steam, Meerkat is starting to lag behind.
Periscope experienced a spike on March 27, kicked off by Vine celebrity Christian Delgrosso, whose tweet got the most engagement on that day and has received the most engagement on Periscope to since.
Wayin data also indicates that Periscope is slightly more popular among women. However both platforms have their share of influential users: Ellen Degeneres and Jimmy Fallon on Periscope; Ashton Kutcher, MTV and Snoop Dogg on Meerkat.
A geographic breakdown highlights the popularity of the rival apps throughout the U.S. While Periscope is far more popular in California, Meerkat has more users in Florida. And the number of users being fairly close in other areas, Periscope is still ahead of Meerkat.
