Mayme Clayton Memorial Today

Beloved Los Angeles collector and eccentric will be honored today at a memorial, per NPR. Mayme Clayton died on Oct. 13 at the age of 83, leaving behind a treasure trove of black Americana, including a signed copy of the first book published by an African American — ex-slave Phillis Wheatley’s 1773 Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral.

Her collection is being moved from her garage to the temporary Mayme A. Clayton Library, Museum & Cultural Center in Culver City.
