Matthews To Middle East, Lest We Forget His Words

MSNBC "Hardball" Host Chris Matthews travels to the Middle East this week with V.P. Joe Biden. On Tuesday he'll interview Biden in Jerusalem. The interviews air Tuesday and Wednesday at 5 p.m. EST. But he might not be going without some trepidation. Last year in NYT's Mark Leibovich's profile of the newsman, Matthews expressed fears that he could be ripe for kidnapping. Leibovich wrote:"As we approached the airport gate, Matthews mentioned that he and his wife, Kathleen, have been contemplating a trip to Damascus. It's something they have wanted to do for a long time. But he worries that he might make an inviting target for a kidnapper. "I can imagine getting some big-name media figure would be a big propaganda catch for them," Matthews said. "You can imagine what the neocons would say if I were kidnapped. They'd be like, 'See, Matthews, terrorism isnÂ’t so funny now, is it?'" Despite the previously expressed worries, Matthews will anchor "Hardball" from Jerusalem on Monday and Tuesday and report from the region throughout the week. NBC News Chief White House Correspondent Chuck Todd will anchor Wednesday through Friday. As Matthews travels with Biden, he's likely to receive a level of security he wouldn't get alone. This should minimize worries. More importantly: who will be more verbose - Matthews or Biden? In the profile, Leibovich wrote: "There is a level of solipsism about Matthews that is oddly endearing in its self-conscious extreme, even by the standards of television vanity." We looked up "solipsism". It's the "philosophical position that nothing outside one's own mind can or does exist." It's also a "postulated condition which may be faced by those living in space or another planet for extended periods of time."
