Matt Harvey Visits Chapman University

Mets All-Star provided students with a first-hand look at how pro athletes deal with the media.

First off, there’s something just perfect about a current Mets All-Star visiting a university writing class taught by a guy named Metzger.

That’s professor Gary Metzger, above left, smiling next to Matt Harvey on the right. Through his solid connections, the teacher was able to get Harvey to visit this month’s interterm course at Chapman University in Southern California:

Harvey was just one of several special guest speakers who spoke to the class during the interterm course offered through the Department of English. Other visitors included former Los Angeles Times sportswriter Chris Foster, who described the sometimes complicated relationships reporters and journalists can have with athletes and coaches. Getting the chance to talk with Harvey about his experience under the MLB microscope provided an even closer look.

For the course, Metzger, himself a former L.A. Times editor, had each student put together a mock column, feature article and “game” report. Harvey followed his Jan. 20 trip to Orange, Calif. with a fun drop-by at the end of this week on Watch What Happens Live.
