Marketing firms Wagner/Junker Agencyand Synthesishave launched Wigibuy, a Groupon-like site that will offer members daily discount deals on products, services, and activities. Five percent of all sales on the site will benefit local charities.
The site launched in Chico, CA, with the five percent donation benefiting Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Butte Humane Society, and other charities. Last week, it launched in Los Angeles, benefiting the Hollywood Arts Council. And proceeds from sales in Las Vegas will go to the Nevada Cancer Institute.
Eric Junker and Jeff Wagner, principles of Wagner/Junker, and Synthesis principle Bill Fishkin are leading the site.
Groupon has been criticized for providing too much traffic to some small businesses. In a statement announcing the Wigibuy launch, Wagner says, “We don’t want a great sales opportunity to turn into a negative cash-flow issue for our business partners, and we realize there will be a big difference in how a large company uses our service compared to a more local business.”
The quote goes on to say that the website will be used as part of “an ongoing marketing and press initiative.”
“For social commerce to work, businesses need to be prepared to turn these customers into longtime brand loyalists,” he says.
