Marissa Mayer Talks Katie Couric ROI

At Fortune's Most Powerful Women event, Yahoo CEO tells audience the online talk show is profitable.

MarissaMayerFortune“By all means, it’s a very profitable and good investment.”

So said Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer to Fortune senior editor-at-large Pattie Sellers about bringing Katie Couric over to the Internet side. She made the remark at this week’s Most Powerful Women dinner in New York with, interestingly enough, Couric sitting in the audience.

This is big news. It underscores the fact that when you have the kind of gargantuan Web traffic and homepage tease power that Yahoo does, an original TV show on the Web can work right out of the gate.

Mayer talked about many other things during her Monday conversation with Sellers, including why an AOL deal was not a good fit for Yahoo and what she’s learned over the course of making 52 acquisition deals at the Silicon Valley company.
