It’s often the case that a large, older app from a developer like Zynga will appear atop our weekly AppData list of fastest-growing games by monthly active users, but usually the gains are just temporary fluctuations in playerbases of many millions of users.
But this week Zynga’s Mafia Wars appears to really be onto something. Including the week’s gain of 1.4 million new MAU, the game is up by about 2.4 million MAU this month:
Top Gainers This Week – Games

Following Mafia Wars, most of the apps on the list are new. My Kingdom is the latest Chinese-language game from Happy Elements, whose largest title otherwise is 開心水族箱 (Happy Aquarium). The company has been leaning toward giving its games English-language names recently for some reason, although it has yet to release localized versions. My Kingdom, in any case, feels fairly similar to Ngmoco’s We Rule.
Ravenwood Fair, the newest game by LOLapps, is now also the company’s biggest game, and is on a trajectory to surpass the company’s top app overall, Gift Creator, by next week. We reviewed the game when it was released, just under two weeks ago.
Crime City is also fast becoming a hit, although the company behind it, Funzio, is not a well known name (yet). It’s followed by another old title, Zoo World, which like other RockYou! titles reversed a long decline in the middle of October.
Also note that the 6waves-published title Sim Hospital has been renamed to Simply Hospital, possibly due to Electronic Arts’ claim on the word Sim in games. Whether Sim or Simply, the game is still doing very well, and should cross a million MAU within another week.
