Online video entertainment site ShortForm today announced the launch of a brand new feature that takes online video to a whole new social level. Live Video Parties are a new way to broadcast and watch VJ curated video channels live, while socializing with your friends. When you start a Live Video Party on ShortForm you can choose and play videos from your own ShortForm channel, or from the thousands of other VJ-curated channels on ShortForm, chat with your friends and fans, and even pass the remote to let other people control which videos are playing in the party.
Nader Ghaffari, CEO of ShortForm, says, “Live Video Parties represent the next form of expression, socialization, and interactivity in online video. The first phase was creative online video production, with producers now creating and uploading over 8 years of content each day. This next phase is all about creative VJs who surface videos, organize them into channels, and then share them with live audiences who interact with one another and the VJ while they view.”
There are already a number of services that let people watch YouTube videos with their friends online, and Google+ Hangouts have added yet another method for doing this. But ShortForm is cool because it has taken social video viewing to the next level by turning the experience of watching videos online with friends into a virtual party.
I had the opportunity to take part in a Live Video Party with Nader yesterday and I thought it was tons of fun. These “parties” are a great way for up-and-coming VJs and tastemakers to really get to know their fans, share all their favorite videos and get feedback about their mixes, and ShortForm is the perfect platform for this sort of thing. Steward Bonn, VP Product at ShortForm says, “Our focus over the last year has been to create the most powerful social video curation platform. As a result, we have a VJ community that has produced thousands of highly engaging channels. We are the only company positioned to leverage that community to make Live Video Parties the next form of mass entertainment.”
You can join an already-existing live video party or create your own on ShortForm’s new Hot Parties page. Blast it out to all your friends on Facebook and Twitter by clicking the ‘Announce’ button from inside the party. Check it out and let us know what you think! Do you think online video parties are the next big thing in social video?
