I am continually impressed by the amazing animations that are circulating the web. From stop motion to 3D animation, rotoscoping, claymation and more, I find myself being inspired by animation online on a daily basis. Recently an amazing light painting video made its way into my radar and so I was inspired to put together this list of 7 of the best animated light videos on the web. I hope they will put a little bit of light in your life!
For those of you who are curious, light animation is created by taking long-exposure photographs in the dark while moving a flashlight through the air to draw pictures. The person drawing the light pictures doesn’t show up in the photo (or shows up only very faintly) because he doesn’t stay still for long enough and he is in the shadows. This form of animation is also known as light painting, light drawing and flashlight animation. Whatever you want to call it, it’s pretty darn cool. That’s for sure.
Huge light drawing viral video – A great number of people
This is the video that inspired this list. The video, which is a promotion for the Alpheon car, was created by a huge number of people using all different colors of light and is hands down the best light animation I have ever seen. The actual animation begins around the 1:30 mark.
Sprint flashlight-animation commercial
The Alpheon is not the first to use light animation for a promotional video. Check out this flashlight animation that Sprint.
YouTube superstar Freddiew has created the most popular light painting animation on YouTube, with over 3 million views. While most light animators stick to happy rainbows and flowers, Freddiew has taken quite a different route – creating a light battle complete with guns, missiles and grenades. And it’s awesome.
This flashlight animation, created at Evergreen State College, is a little more abstract than some of the others. It is made up of a lot of scribbles in the air, distorted figures and a random game of Pong in the middle.
Lightpaint Piano Player
I love this video of a little light-paint guy playing the piano, not only because it’s original and cute but also because it is a good example of how light animation works. You can see the ghostlike form of the animator in the background, as he is drawing each frame. The frames are then put together to create a stop motion sequence.
Making Future Magic
Here’s an awesome example of painting with light using an iPad. We wrote about ‘Making Future Magic’ a couple of months ago when it started going viral. Today it has been viewed over 1.4 million times on Vimeo. If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to check it out below.
Coda is a longer, more artistic video art piece created using a combination of light-painting, and pixilation. I think this video is absolutely beautiful. It is either depressing or hopeful, depending upon how you look at it.
