A glimpse of the new desktop version of Google Maps has surfaced just ahead of Google’s I/O conference, where the feature is expected to be announced. Droid Life has captured screenshots of a sign-up form that show, among other things, a smarter search bar that prominently features recommendations from Google+.

“The new smarter search bar is your starting point for discovery,” the description reads. “One search makes all the information you need available at a glance — read up on your destination, see ratings and reviews, and sometimes, even take a peek inside.”

A closer look at the search bar reveals how Google users can narrow their search results with recommendations from their own “circles” on Google+ or by other users who are “top reviewers.” This feature was first spotted last week.

It appears that the Maps will also encourage reviews by tailoring future search results based on things that users have previously starred, much like on Netflix.

We’ll be at the I/O conference this week and will report back with a full update. For now, check out more screenshots and details about Google Maps here.
