A 50-year-old unemployed woman has filed a $8,386.88 lawsuit against a 35-year-old man who humiliated her after ending their Facebook relationship.
Cheryl Gray of Michigan and Wylie Iwan of Washington state met through the game Mafia wars on Facebook and eventually developed an online relationship. She booked a trip to visit him, and about a week before her scheduled departure he revealed that he’d met someone else.
At first she was okay with the news, but then things deteriorated — according to The Tri-City Herald, both parties claimed the other had posted nasty things on Facebook. A few weeks later, an attorney representing Gray asked Iwan for $956.88 to reimburse her for the trip she didn’t take, plus gifts and flowers she’d sent him.
A week later, an email said that claim was dropped. Almost one month after that, on May 18, Gray filed a civil lawsuit in Michigan asking for $8,368.88 for misrepresentation, promissory estoppel, defamation of character and intentional infliction of emotional distress,” according to the Herald.
An attorney who spoke to the Herald said that he expected the court to dismiss this suit as frivolous. But if for some reason the civil court did decide to hear the case, any ruling would set an unusual precedent.
