<em>Politico</em> Loses Editor to MSNBC.com

A big loss for Politico today. Laura McGann, a deputy managing editor, is leaving the publication to move to Manhattan to be MSNBC.com's news editor. Gang, We wanted to announce a big career move for Laura McGann, who is leaving POLITICO to move to New York and help launch a new version of MSNBC.com as the site’s news editor. Laura landed at POLITICO in December of 2010 as deputy Congress editor, where she helped us shore up and expand the best Congress team in Washington. Laura’s skills as a story editor quickly helped her move up the ranks, as she later launched and ran the money and politics team, which made an immediate mark on coverage of that area. And when POLITICO Pro needed a managing editor shortly after launch, Laura stepped in to help elevate Pro’s policy coverage. Her keen eye for the sharpest stories helped take Pro to a new level, and her work with Darren Samuelsohn and Anna Palmer on the military sexual assault series in the past month was a real showcase for Laura’s talent as an editor. Laura’s last day is Friday, and there will be goodbye drinks and toasts at a time and place TBA. We have big shoes to fill with Laura’s departure, and John, Kim, Danielle, Bill and Marty will be discussing how to move forward in filling an important opening at Pro. In the meantime, we're continuing to build an excellent team of talented editors and writers. Our new homepage is a high-impact, high-profile space and we are taking several steps to ensure that our stories, headlines and photos project the voice and spirit of msnbc in a big way. With that goal in mind, Laura McGann joins us from Politico, where she had a stellar run as an editor, most recently as managing editor of Politico Pro. Laura was previously the founding managing editor and then editor of The Washington Independent, a nonprofit news and politics site. She got her start in political and digital journalism at Talking Points Memo and later spent a year at Harvard, writing about the future of news for the Nieman Journalism Lab. Laura will be leading our newsdesk as our Senior Editor. Joining Laura's homepage editing team is Melissa Jeltsen, who is currently a front page editor at The Huffington Post, where she helps craft editorial direction and oversight, writes and edits stories, and coordinates breaking news coverage. Melissa also began her journalism career at Talking Points Memo. Her work has appeared in Jezebel, Cosmopolitan, The Boston Globe among other publications. Our new site is designed with big visuals and big headlines, and the photo team is at the heart of our strategy to publish powerful photojournalism that speaks to our values. Our photo editor Amy Pereira is building an outstanding team to make every story shine with great visuals, as well as a home page that is immersive and emotional. The latest addition to Amy's team is Maria Carrillo Lokke, who joins us as Associate Photo Editor. Maria was most recently at The New Yorker, where she worked as a photo editor for the magazine's website and digital editions, and was an editor and frequent contributor to Photo Booth, the magazine's daily photography blog. She is also a successful freelance artist and photographer in her own right. We are embarking on many new projects with this launch, and none is more important than our community space, where our audience will have their first chance to shape their own debate inside msnbc. We have several very cool community features and functions to share with you and our audience shortly. To build the foundations for a thriving msnbc community, Gabriela Resto-Montero will become our first community editor, joining Farra Kober's team. Gabriela, who has been part of our homepage editing team for most of the past year, will make our new community space a vibrant, fast-growing and inviting home for our audience.
