The White House Correspondents’ Association has announced Larry Wilmore, host of Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore as the host of the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, taking place on April 30, 2016.
“Larry’s edgy, even provocative, brand of humor means he’s certainly up to the task of skewering politicians of all ideological stripes, and we don’t expect the nation’s news media to escape unscathed, either,” said WHCA president and WSJ White House correspondent Carol Lee in a statement.
Wilmore’s first tweet about his appointment was more earnest excitement than edge, if you can read into a tweet:

As Emily Heil noted in a post today announcing the news, WaPo’s Colby Itkowitz totally called this last year in a Reliable Source blog item about last year’s dinner titled, “Can we nominate Larry Wilmore for next year’s WHCD headliner?”
Here is how Itkowitz described an exchange between Wilmore and RNC chair Reince Priebus at the dinner, which was Wilmore’s first:
In one corner of the dance floor, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus slipped his business card to first-time White House correspondent’s dinner attendee Larry Wilmore, host of Comedy Central’s “The Nightly Show.”
“You saw that?” Wilmore laughed when we noted the interaction. “What was up with that? I was like, ‘slow your roll.’”
“The guy’s name is an anagram,” Wilmore riffed, referring to a joke Colbert made about rearranging the letters in Priebus’s name to reference a part of the male anatomy. It’s “…more like a banana gram.”
“He had no idea who I was,” Wilmore said. “Trust me.”
