Julie Bloom Named <i>International NY Times</i> Culture Editor

Julie Bloom has been named the culture editor of the International New York Times. She began freelancing for the Times in 2006, and joined the culture desk a year later as a web producer. Bloom was most recently online culture web editor. The memo announcing the move — from culture editor Danielle Mattoon, Europe editor Dick Stevenson and assistant managing editor Larry Ingrassia — is below. In her new role, Julie will direct culture coverage, digitally and in print, for the global New York Times, and direct journalists covering everything from art to theater to dance. She will report to Danielle Mattoon, the Culture editor in New York, in this new job, which is a reimagination of the editing job previously done by Katherine Knorr of the IHT. Julie, over the course of her six years in the Culture department, has unblinkingly led the desk's integration of Web and print, pushing for more urgent and ambitious coverage in each medium. Working closely with critics and reporters, she has been integral to the expansion of ArtsBeat into an up-to-the-minute blog, the redesign of several section fronts, the launch of new initiatives like the Arts and Entertainment Guide and video series such as The Sweet Spot, In Performance, and Press Play. She has also overseen Culture's live event coverage, including the Oscars, Tonys and Golden Globe Awards, and helped to develop the successful second screen dashboard approach to how the newsroom now covers live events. Working closely with fellow producers and editors on the graphics, interactive, multimedia, video and photo desks, she has helped to conceive and spearhead major multimedia and interactive projects including Tony Tommasini's Top 10 Composers project; the live blog for Charles's Isherwood's look at "Death of a Salesman"; the videos from the summer Still Life series; the behind-the-scenes X-ray process for Matisse's "Bathers by the River"; the restoration of the Velázquez's Philip IV; the scratching of the surface of a Picasso; the interactive guides to the renovated American Wing and Islamic galleries; the conductor series with Alan Gilbert; the build-a-pop-song interactive; Holland Cotter's guide with Damon Winter to art in Africa; and Alessandra Stanley's narrated clips guide to television abroad. In 2011, she began overseeing the department's dance coverage, assigning and editing reviews, features and news stories, from Alastair Macaulay's exploration of Indian dance to Ellen Barry's reports on the acid-attack scandal at the Bolshoi in Moscow. She has also continued to write for the paper. Throughout, she has pushed the section forward while upholding the standards of The Times. Julie started freelancing for The Times in 2006. She joined the culture desk in 2007 as a Web producer and was then promoted to senior Web producer and later assistant editor. Prior to joining The Times, Julie was an editor at Jane and Radar magazines. Originally from Palos Verdes, Calif., she has a master's degree in journalism from NYU and degrees in English Literature and Dance from the University of California, Berkeley.
