John Balzar is leaving the LA Times, according to LAObserved, and there’s a strong hint in his farewell that the discord at the paper pushed him to seek another job:
The luckiest and most alive times of my life have been in the service of readers as a staff writer for this newspaper. Down the road, I may find the right opening to speak my mind about events that have taken such a toll on my colleagues, my community and what has been my craft for so long.
Balzar’s new gig is as senior vice president of communications for the Humane Society, which is fitting. His book, Yukon Alone, chronicled the world of dog sled racing. But Balzar’s writing wasn’t limited to the Outdoors section–many recall his best work in the op-ed pages.
