Joel Lovell Departs New York Times

Joel Lovell is leaving The New York Times to join This American Life and digital media company Atavist. Lovell had served as deputy editor of The New York Times Magazine and most recently worked in the Times newsroom on special projects.

Lovell told The Huffington Post in an email that he is joining This American Life and the Atavist because they “happen to be the most inventive places I can think of, in terms of where they’re pushing their respective media. Anyway, for me, that’s a pretty exciting work life to imagine.”

Lovell was widely thought to be next in line to become editor of the Times Mag when Hugo Lindgren departed. He was instead shifted to special projects, and Jake Silverstein won the editor role.
